Thankfully, despite the rapid development of the once-farmland surrounding this community, it's quaint downtown has stayed largely intact, and even been improved. Main Street in downtown Fort Mill is still the heart of the city, and it shows. Cruises on Norwegian Epic

ncl epic cruise

While you can say that about plenty of other cruise ships across the world, it really is the case when it comes to this vessel — and that’s because the Norwegian Epic cruise ship is the only one of its kind. There are no other cruise ships that are like it in, literally, the entire world, no matter where you sail. As with a visit to any city, Epic's passengers need to plan ahead to make the most of their time onboard. Dinners and shows should be booked ahead of sailing or you may find yourself on the outside looking in. Lines are common, and much of the onboard experience, particularly dining, costs extra. Norwegian Epic offers solo travelers a stateroom designed and priced especially for them, plus private access to The Studio Lounge.

Your stateroom may be on any deck and assigned up to one day prior to embarkation. A Sail Away Balcony stateroom guarantees a Balcony stateroom or better! Looking for a getaway without the need to fly far, then Norwegian has options for you. The cruise line has ships leaving from New York, Boston, Miami, New Orleans and Seattle. If you do want to travel abroad they have ships in Europe leaving from ports like Venice, Barcelona and Copenhagen. Check out all of their itineraries on our site and then call us to discuss the best vacation option for you with our expert cruise consultants.

The bar is a great place to sit outside and enjoy the good weather and have any number of daily frozen specials. Not only are the cabins well thought out for only 100 square feet, but they’re also well-designed and comfortable for single passengers with no corners cut on the design. Epic is the first cruise ship ever to have (and so many of them) "studios".

Cabin Overview

Primarily because the ship has been in locations around the world at the same time I have and always seems to be going somewhere I want or need to be. So when I’ve wanted a quick getaway, the EPIC always seems to be available and it’s usually quite affordable for a last-minute vacation. (I’ve also used the Epic for Transatlantic crossings to get back to America when traveling overseas). The next year, the ship was featured on the show Mighty Ships, a Discovery Channel series that follows the routes, passengers and crews of cruise ships around the world.

It also has a decent-sized bar to sit at where the bartenders will make you a martini of choice. I find that the skill level of the bartenders is lacking with good martinis, unfortunately. Look at the configuration and select a cabin with the bed closer to the balcony door. Having the bed immediately upon entering the room makes it feel smaller, so the configuration with the bed closer to the balcony window just feels more spacious, even though they’re the same size. You might think that because this ship has such a party vibe for the adults, that there’s little left for the kids, but that’s hardly the case.

In addition to the outdoor activities, there’s an indoor bowling alley, Ice bar, video games, library, casino, theater, nightclub, shopping, and more. Pools, a waterslide, an aqua park, a rock climbing wall, and huge sun decks are among the many things to do on the Epic. Not much to say about the pool bar, other than it’s convenient when you’re at the pool or in the Garden Cafe for a quick bite.

NCL Epic's SplashGolf was designed by Adventure Golf Services (a company specializing in the design and construction of mini-golf courses). The facility was installed in October 2015, during the ship's drydock refurbishment in Brest France. Instead of traditional solid mini-golf balls, SplalshGolf's balls are larger-sized and floating. The official unit of currency of the Czech Republic is the Czech crown (Kc, CZK), which is divided into 100 hellers.

ncl epic cruise

Again, however, on a recent cruise, there were more misses than normal, especially in specialty dining. I believe this is temporary due to all of the supply chain issues. After a planned Transatlantic in December 2022 on the Epic, I’ll confirm if the dining has improved. The Family staterooms are simply rooms that are closer to activities for children and many are connected rooms. The biggest change for the NCL Epic in 2024 is the cancellation of the Pricilla Queen of The Desert theater show. Norwegian has decided to remove all Broadway-style shows in favor of their own in-house production shows.

Attached to the Chinese restaurant, this is a bar serving traditional dumplings and dim sum. A very good Chinese restaurant with classic Chinese dishes and soups. Choose from classic treatments, like massages and facials, or go with a medi-spa treatment to address some fine lines or wrinkles.

I don’t find the staff here to be terribly engaging or the drinks to be anything special. Casual pub-style restaurant/bar open late serving everything from fish and chips, burgers, and chicken wings to healthier options like salads and soups. However, no matter when cruisers first enjoyed a Norwegian Epic cruise, whether before or after the 2015 renovations, one thing remained true — a Norwegian Epic cruise is the perfect place to party. So let’s start out with the most intriguing thing about this ship. While other cruising vessels usually have at least one other ship in its class — a ship that shares its vibe, facilities, amenities, etc. — Norwegian Epic is all on its own. Dining venues enhancements include new carpeting and decors, and their furniture was reupholstered.

Opened late 2021 with the arrival of Virgin’s Scarlett Lady, this state of the art terminal  – Palm Grove – is located on the north west side of the port (see link to map below). Driving from the north, you may take I-95 and exit at 3B Bayside. Keep going south and turn left into Northeast 5th Street, where you will eventually get to the bridge into the Port of Miami. In late-October 2019 was approved the agreement for Brightline Miami to be rebranded "Virgin Trains" and Virgin Group to build a train station (Virgin Trains PortMiami) at the cruise port. The new station serves high-speed trains and connects PortMiami directly with the USA's intercity railway system and Orlando International Airport.

Parking at the Miami Cruise Port

Designated disabled permit parking spaces are available in each of these garages. Not to mention, several brands also include Miami as a port of call on some itineraries. These brands include Carnival Cruise Line, Celebrity Cruises, Crystal Cruises, Disney Cruise Line, MSC Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, Oceania, Regent Seven Seas, Royal Caribbean, Viking, and Virgin Voyages. Fish from some of the best spots in Miami, including Biscayne Bay and South Beach. Via the Port of Miami Tunnel

The iconic sails of Terminal G make it an instantly recognizable landmark in Miami, and the terminal also serves Royal Caribbean. Terminal J is a boutique facility that caters to luxury cruises and smaller ships. Click here to read our full article on Miami hotels with cruise shuttles. Chances are slim that you’ll be the only cruise ship in port the day that you sail out and when you get back. If you’re interested in the other cruise ships that you’ll see while in port, then you can see a full schedule at Crew-Center.com. It’s a neat way to know what other mega ships you will see while on your trip.

Head up to the roof to get a dramatic sweeping view of the entire port area in the thoughtfully-designed open-air wildlife exhibit. Miami is one of Florida's most popular vacation destinations and the embarkation point for major cruise lines. If you want to tack on some time before or after your cruise, here are some things to do in Miami. The hotel has several on-site restaurants and is near plenty of others; it also has a shuttle to the port for about $10 per passenger.

What about renting a car – with a free shuttle from the port to the Car Rental center at the Miami Airport - and explore at leisure off-the-beaten-track places like the fabulous Miami Zoo, or Cape Florida. The drop-off is at the Miami International Airport and from here a FREE shuttle will take you directly to the Port of Miami, right to the Terminal of your cruise ship. Once disembarking the cruise, just get on the Car Rental Shuttle (which stops by all the Terminals) to get back to the Airport.

As it is only a short while away, passengers can easily get to the Port of Miami with an Uber or a taxi service. The estimated cost of renovations is $180 million, and the terminal sits on the northwestern side of the Port of Miami. Cruise Terminal AA/AAA recently underwent renovations costing $300 million. The terminal’s two berths both serve MSC Cruises, and the cruise line is responsible for financing, operating, building, and maintaining Terminal AA/AAA as it is the homeport of its future fleet.

As you walk and discover the neighborhood's art, you can stop at craft breweries, art galleries and trendy restaurants and cafes. Miami is packed with all sorts of hotels that don't participate in a traditional loyalty program. If you have kids or additional time, the JW Marriott Turnberry Resort & Spa (starting at 40,000 points per night), farther out in Aventura, is a terrific bet since it has its own water park and lazy river. In the same neighborhood as the Hampton Inn, you'll find the upscale, full-service JW Marriott Miami. Nights start at 35,000 points, so you can use a Marriott 35k free night certificate on some dates of the year. Depending on your elite status tier with Marriott Bonvoy, you might be eligible for free breakfast at this hotel.

Taxi stands are on the arrival (ground) level of the airport (outside baggage claim). Make sure you carry a credit card with airport lounge access as a benefit. The Chase Sapphire Reserve® gives you access to Priority Pass lounges, while The Platinum Card® from American Express will open the door to the Amex Centurion Lounge at MIA. Many other Trolley Routes (also free) crisscross downtown, connecting to farther places like Coconut Grove (ideal to visit Vizcaya Gardens), the Design District, Wynwood, Little Havana and Coral Gables. The Downtown Bus Terminal, close to the Government Center, has routes to South Beach, Key Biscayne (good for the Seaquarium) and as far as the Aventura Mall. Miami is a city of multiple charms with lots of attractions to enjoy during a longer stay.

The chain's free breakfast is a great way to start the day; it'll hold you over until you get on the ship and can enjoy a leisurely lunch before sailaway. Other Public Transportation can be particularly useful when moving around Downtown area prior to Embarking or Disembarking. All major points of interest in Miami are easy to reach by public transportation including South Beach, Little Havana, Dadeland, Key Biscayne and as far north as the Aventura Mall and Ft. After all, how many have traveled 25 miles to Aventura Mall not knowing that Dadeland Mall is just 15-minutes away by train? Why pay for a tour to the Vizcaya Gardens and Museum, to Wynwood or Little Havana when you have a Trolley that allows you to explore it on your own for free?

I’ve been seeking the information you posted for some time now but didn’t know where to look. We are at the Holiday Inn adjacent to the port so your information is perfect. Miami Beach - especially the area along the beach - isn't exactly local to the port especially walking since you need to walk to downtown Miami and then cross back to Port Miami. Home to an array of cultures, Miami is the place to go to see Art Deco designs, dance the night away to Latin rhythms, snap photos of pink flamingos, and relax on legendary beaches—all on the same day!

Either driving trough Downtown Miami – can be chaotic but not too bad on weekend early mornings – or trough the Port Tunnel. The latter is advisable unless you are staying in a hotel Downtown or in Miami Beach. The Tunnel entrance/exit is on MacArthur Causeway (I-395) that connects mainland Miami to South Beach, right in the middle of Watson Island (very close to the mainland). This staggering number is concentrated on the weekends when up to eight mega-ships moor at its eleven terminals. Inevitably, disembarking and embarking in Miami during a weekend can be far from smooth and, at times, frustrating.

How Fast Does a Cruise Ship Go? Top Cruise Ship Speeds

average speed of a cruise ship

Certainly fuel consumption can play a major role in determining what speed to travel at, but other conditions can dictate a slower speed. Not only do cruise ships rarely travel at their fastest speed, but they often go much slower. During her sea trials in 2016, Harmony of the Seas' top speed was in excess of 25 knots, making her the fastest cruise ship in Royal Caribbean's fleet at the time. You can read more about the differences between cruise ships and ocean liners here. Faster cruise ships don’t necessarily have more powerful engines. Cruise ships use various propulsion systems, such as diesel-electric engines or gas turbines, to generate power and maintain their speed.

How Fast Do Sailing Boats Go?

This ocean liner (technically not a cruise ship, but who’s counting?) holds the title for the fastest passenger ship, capable of speeds up to a staggering 30 knots. Before we start, it’s essential to understand that the speed of ships is measured differently than we’re used to on land. Instead of miles per hour, sailors use nautical miles and knots. It’s hard to imagine a massive vessel, complete with rooms, restaurants, entertainment centers and possibly hundreds, sometimes thousands of passengers, moving swiftly. But, if you’ve ever set sail before, you know large ships make it from port to port somehow without sprinting across the water. In this guide, we’ll answer some speed-related questions and explore factors that impact a ship’s cruising rate.

Cruise Ship Cruising Speed

Larger ships generally have more powerful engines, enabling them to achieve higher speeds. Additionally, their streamlined designs reduce drag and resistance, allowing for smoother and more efficient travel through the water. As you can see, there are many technical aspects of cruise ships that affect how far they can travel in a day. While these factors may seem complex, they all work together to ultimately determine the fastest comfortable cruising speed. It’s important to note that the distance traveled by a cruise ship can vary depending on the ship’s speed and the route being taken. For example, if the ship is traveling through rough waters or against strong currents on winds, it may not be able to travel as far in a day as it would under ideal conditions.

Speed of Cruise Ships in Knots (Kn), Miles per hour (mph) and Kilometres per hour (kph)

This may not sound like a lot, but over the course of a full day, a cruise ship can cover a significant distance. Another famous ship from cruising’s golden age, Holland America’s SS Rotterdam (now a floating hotel) cruised from 1958 through the early 2000s. Sea trials aren’t conducted under the same conditions for every ship, so it’s impossible to say which cruise ship could actually go fastest. Cruise ships have strict emergency response plans and safety protocols in place to handle any situation at sea. These plans include evacuation procedures, communication protocols, and regular training exercises for crew members to ensure the safety of passengers and crew. Therefore, one knot equals about 1/5th of a nautical mile per hour.

Top 5 Cruise Lines by Number of Total Berths: Now and Into the Future

Cruise ships can go faster when they’re going in the same direction as the waves. However, rather than waiting for the right sea conditions to break speed records, cruise lines always use an average that factors in going both with and against the waves. When a cruise ship goes faster, the ride also becomes bumpier for the passengers. The slower the ship is travelling, the more submerged the hull is, which makes for a smoother ride.

These modern cruise ships showcase the advancements in technology, design, and efficiency that have shaped the industry in recent years. Each flagship vessel represents its respective company’s commitment to innovation, sustainability, and exceptional guest experiences. The average cruise ship cruising speed is about 20 knots per hour. A nautical mile is a bit longer than a statute, or land-measured mile. So, if a cruise ship is sailing at a speed of 21 knots, you might compare that to roughly 24 mph.

How Fast Do Cruise Ships Travel?

Our guide to ship prefix meanings provides an overview of the prefixes used for different types of vessels. Of course, there are some ships that are capable of traveling even faster, which means they can cover even more ground in a shorter amount of time. The answer, of course, depends on a variety of factors, including the ship’s size, speed, and itinerary.

The fastest cruise ships can reach a top speed of thirty knots. Thirty knots is fast for a ship, and most cruise ships never travel at it. When you convert 1 knot to miles per hour, it works out to 1.15 standard miles per hour for every nautical mile per hour. So, although land-based miles per hour are just slightly faster than knots, for general purposes, it's a close comparison. For example, if your ship is sailing 20 knots, it's sailing roughly 23 mph.

Check out this video on YouTube on how fast cruise ships go:

Cunard Line's Transatlantic liner RMS Queen Mary 2 (QM2) weighs almost 151,500 tons, with a cruising speed of 29 knots (33,5 mph / 54 kph). The below photo shows an engine room telegraph (aka engine order telegraph or Chadburn). This device was used on older ships and submarines for communication between Navigation Bridge and Engine Room, where crew powered the vessel at certain (fixed) speeds.

While speed is an essential aspect of cruise ship travel, it’s important to consider the environmental impact of these vessels. The faster a ship goes, the more fuel it burns, contributing to air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, high-speed travel can also cause noise pollution and disturbance to marine life. Ultimately, the average speed of a cruise ship ensures a balance between timeliness, passenger comfort, and memorable experiences throughout the journey. The distance from Southampton to Miami is (according to Google) 4725 Nautical miles. The maximum speed of a cruise ship is around 21 to 25 knots (24-29 mph/39-54 kph).

The device would float behind the vessel and release the rope as the boat advanced. After a specific time passed, sailors brought the rope back in and counted the knots between the boat and the wood. A racing sailboat can reach up to 15 knots, but a regular sailboat moves at much slower speeds, usually only 4 to 6 knots.

By dividing one minute into 60 seconds, sailors could easily calculate the number of minutes needed to cover a certain distance. However, since the invention of the steam-powered internal combustion engine, we now use miles instead of knots. The cheetah of the cruise ship Savannah is none other than the SS United States. But remember, she’s more of an ocean liner than a traditional cruise ship. As for our friends at Norwegian Cruise Line, they are typically cruising at a maximum speed of around 24 knots.

Typically, the Azipods all point in the same direction, towards the ship’s stern, which propels the ship forward. However, captains can adjust the amount of thrust and the direction of each pod, allowing the vessel to turn or even travel in reverse. Of course, putting a massive cruise ship in reverse is a bit different than backing up your car. The Queen Mary 2, for example, will take you across the Atlantic from the US to Europe.

Large-ship Ocean Cruise Lines: World's Best in 2021

how big are cruise ships

The Oasis Class boasts 18 total decks, lengths up to 1,188 feet and up to 6,988 passengers — that’s 10 times the passenger capacity of the Love Boat. Consider that from 1990 until 2000, most cruise new ships built were in the 70,000-80,000 gross ton range. (Gross tonnage is a standard measure of a ship’s size.) The average size of all new ships during this time from the major cruise lines was 80,000 gross tons. The Oasis-class vessels include some of the most renowned names in maritime history.

How Many Feet Is a Cruise Ship? Specific Measurements of Popular Liners

The most common comparison used is perhaps the world’s most famous ocean liner, the Titanic. Until you’re actually next to one, it’s almost impossible to truly appreciate just how big modern cruise ships are. While just a few decades ago they were relatively modest in size, the average tonnage of a new ship has exploded in recent years. The largest cruise ship in the world — Royal Caribbean’s Symphony of the Seas — can hold 6,600 passengers and 2,200 crew. As the travel industry continues to stretch the limits of what is possible at sea, the size of mega cruise ships keeps reaching new heights. As the average ships are not as wide as their mega-ship counterparts, their gross tonnage is less.

Mid-sized Cruise Ships

Adults will love the 13 different dining options and an indoor promenade or Panorama Lounge for shopping, having a drink, or just relaxing. Today, any new ship from a major line will be at least 140,000 gross tons, with many much larger than that. Passenger counts have also swelled, with many new ships carrying 5,000 cruisers when completely full.

Chart: See the Dramatic Rise in the Size of Cruise Ships

Harmony of the Seas was the first in the class to feature the 10-Story Ultimate Abyss slide, which is located aft of the ship above the AquaTheater. The slide has since been a major feature on new Oasis-class vessels and added during refurbishments. MSC Seashore first debuted in August 2020 and is one of only two ships in the Seaside EVO-class. AIDA Cruises AIDAcosma, the second in the Excellence-class, was first released in December 2021. Costa Toscana is Costa Smeralda's sister ship, meaning the two ships are identical in size.

Rude Things NEVER to Do on a Cruise (According to Real Passengers)

Put simply, it's much cheaper for a cruise line to build and operate one 6,000 person cruise ship than two ships with 3,000 people sailing. It requires less staff, and less cost to build a single large ship than two smaller ones. Until you are standing next to a modern cruise ship, it’s hard to appreciate just how massive they actually are. The panorama of cruise ships is evolving, markedly evidenced by the burgeoning vessel sizes designed to satiate the growing appetite for experiential and luxurious sea travel.

Beyond the biggest ships

From educational lectures and cultural performances to cooking classes and wine tastings, small ships provide a diverse array of options for guests to enjoy. Additionally, with fewer passengers onboard, there is often more flexibility in scheduling and access to amenities, ensuring a relaxed and unhurried atmosphere. The LNG-powered vessel will also have a guest capacity of 5,610 at double occupancy, which can reach a maximum of 7,600. Mid-sized cruise ships strike a balance between intimacy and variety. These ships offer a wider range of amenities compared to small ships while still maintaining a sense of community among passengers.

"Excellent service, attractive ship with plenty of open space, and cabins are nicely appointed," said one voter about the Seabourn Encore. "Undoubtedly the best cruise line ever," said another, who traveled aboard the Seabourn Ovation. Other cruise lines surged ahead as travelers looked back at their vacation memories. No. 3 Regent Seven Seas moved up the list one spot, with a strong score above 92 points (out of 100). No. 6 Oceania Cruises also got a better score this year, rising two places, as numerous voters mentioned the high quality of the line's onboard cuisine.

Compare cruise ship sizes

Small ships include the 600-passenger Seabourn Encore, 490-passenger Seven Seas Navigator and 148-passenger Wind Spirit. Large ships include the 3,000-passenger Carnival Sunshine, 2,850-passenger Celebrity Solstice, 3,080-passenger Crown Princess, and 2,500-passenger Disney Dream. A ship's size -- and not necessarily its cruise line -- is one of the most important factors you'll need to weigh when choosing a cruise to suit your lifestyle and vacationing preferences.

This year's World's Best Awards survey was open for voting January 11 through May 10, 2021, as destinations around the world were lifting COVID-19 restrictions.

However, most ships eventually make it to the scrapyard when all is said and done, where parts are sold, recycled or dismantled and melted down into new steel. For the most part, these decks are accessible to ship crew only, and house the majority of crew rooms and their rest areas. But “below deck,” is also where restricted areas such as the morgue and holding cells are located.

Aboard the modern cruise ship, it becomes evident that the industry has ventured far beyond merely the concept of travel, creating a comprehensive environment of leisure and thrill. The marvels of engineering have enabled the cruise industry to construct vessels that are grand in scope and ambition. As we drift from port to port, these behemoths of the sea redefine our interpretation of travel. The cruising industry is constantly striving to outdo itself, with Icon of the Seas being the most anticipated example. On the other end, though, are ships that lack some of the thrills that make the biggest cruise ships so appealing. For more than a century, cruise lines have competed to claim the title of world's largest cruise ship.
